Understanding your speed test results

A speed test measures four things, and each tells you something different about the quality of your connection. Knowing what they mean makes the difference between panicking over a number and actually diagnosing a problem. Below is a plain-language explanation of download, upload, ping, and jitter, along with the ranges you should expect from a healthy connection.

Download speed

Download speed measures how quickly data travels from the internet to your device, expressed in megabits per second (Mbps). It is the number that matters most for everyday use: streaming video, loading web pages, downloading files, and updating apps all depend on it. Streaming HD video needs roughly 5–8 Mbps per stream, 4K needs about 25 Mbps, and general browsing works comfortably from around 10 Mbps. A household with several people streaming and working at once benefits from 100 Mbps or more.

Upload speed

Upload speed measures data travelling in the opposite direction — from your device out to the internet. It governs video calls, sending large email attachments, backing up files to cloud storage, live streaming, and online gaming. Video conferencing typically needs 3–5 Mbps of upload; anything above 10 Mbps is comfortable for most remote work.

Ping (latency)

Ping, also called latency, measures the round-trip time for a small packet of data to reach a server and come back, in milliseconds (ms). Unlike download and upload, lower is better. Under 20 ms is excellent, 20–50 ms is very good, 50–100 ms is acceptable for most uses, and above 150 ms you will notice lag in video calls and online games. Ping is largely determined by physical distance to the server and by the routing your ISP uses — a fast connection with high ping still feels sluggish in real-time applications.

Jitter

Jitter is the variation in ping over time. If your latency bounces between 20 ms and 120 ms, that instability causes choppy audio, frozen video frames, and rubber-banding in games — even when your average speed looks fine. Jitter under 10 ms is good; consistently above 30 ms points to network congestion, an overloaded WiFi channel, or a problem upstream at your provider.

Why is my upload speed lower than my download?

This is normal and by design. Most residential connections are asymmetric: cable and DSL technologies allocate far more bandwidth to the downstream channel than the upstream one, because typical household usage is heavily weighted toward consuming content rather than producing it. Ratios of 10:1 or 20:1 are common — a 200 Mbps cable plan might offer only 10–20 Mbps of upload. Fiber connections are usually symmetric, delivering the same speed in both directions, which is why they are preferred for remote work, content creation, and self-hosting.

Mbps vs MB/s — what's the difference?

These two units are constantly confused, and the difference matters. Mbps means megabits per second and is how ISPs advertise speed. MB/s means megabytes per second and is how your browser or download manager reports file transfer progress. There are 8 bits in a byte, so to convert, divide by 8: a 100 Mbps connection downloads at roughly 12.5 MB/s at best. If your 100 Mbps plan shows a 12 MB/s download in your browser, nothing is wrong — that is exactly what you are paying for.

How to interpret a disappointing result

If your measured speed is far below what you pay for, work through these causes before contacting your provider:

  • WiFi vs cable — WiFi is the single most common bottleneck. Walls, distance from the router, interference from neighbouring networks, and older standards (802.11n) can cut throughput dramatically. Test again with an Ethernet cable to see what your line is actually capable of.
  • Peak hours — shared infrastructure such as cable gets congested in the evening, typically between 19:00 and 23:00. A result that drops sharply at night but recovers in the morning points to network congestion rather than a fault.
  • Other devices — a device syncing backups, downloading a game update, or streaming 4K in another room consumes the same pipe. Pause other activity before testing.
  • Router and hardware limits — an old router, an ageing modem, or a 100 Mbps Ethernet port can cap a gigabit connection well below its potential.
  • Your ISP — if wired tests are consistently far below the advertised rate across different times of day, the problem is likely upstream. Record several results with timestamps before opening a support ticket; providers respond faster to documented evidence.

Finally, remember that advertised speeds are usually described as "up to" a maximum. Reaching 80–90% of your plan's rate over a wired connection is a healthy result.

Frequently asked questions

Why do different speed tests give me different results?

Each test uses different servers in different locations, different numbers of parallel connections, and different measurement methods. Distance to the test server alone can change the result significantly. Compare tests from the same service at different times rather than comparing across services.

What internet speed do I actually need?

For one or two people browsing and streaming HD, 25–50 Mbps is plenty. A family with multiple 4K streams, video calls, and gaming is comfortable at 100–300 Mbps. Beyond 500 Mbps, the benefit for typical household use is marginal — upload speed and latency usually matter more than raw download bandwidth.

Does a VPN slow down my connection?

Yes, somewhat. Encryption adds processing overhead and your traffic takes a longer path through the VPN server, which raises ping and reduces throughput. With a good provider and a nearby server the loss is often 10–20%. A distant server or an overloaded free VPN can cut speeds by far more.

Why is my ping high even though my speed is fast?

Bandwidth and latency are independent. Ping depends on physical distance to the server, the number of network hops, and congestion along the route — not on how much data your connection can carry. Satellite internet is the classic example: high bandwidth, very high latency.

How often should I test my connection?

For general reassurance, occasionally is enough. If you are troubleshooting, test several times across different hours — morning, afternoon, and evening — and on both WiFi and a wired connection. A single measurement is a snapshot; a pattern across a day is evidence.
